Picture (courtesy of Milan Simich) of the famous Slug’s Saloon where I “auditioned” with Elvin Jones in 1971 and saw so many great groups, even playing there in the 1960s with Steve Grossman, Lenny White and George Cables on a weekend matinee. Slugs was on the lower East Side on East 3rd Street between avenues B and C, which was a “no-fly zone in those days. After Lee Morgan was shot by his wife, the club slowly faded, but it was an important part of the early ’70s scene.Pictured here happens to be two of my most important mentors, Charles Lloyd and Pete LaRoca on drums.
