DAVID LIEBMAN MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER PROPOSAL: SEEING THE LIGHT

To whom it may concern:

Allow me to introduce myself. For the past forty plus years I have been a jazz saxophonist, composer and educator who in 2011 received the highest honor given in the field by the US government, the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters award as well as other international accolades throughout my career.

I have a story to share with people that I call “Seeing The Light.” It begins with contracting polio as a child, which seemed to set the course of my future in one direction, only to be changed by a pivotal event that ultimately redirected my life’s work. It is a universal story for all people concerning how an extremely powerful and personal experience, once realized, can become a catalyst for change and direction in one’s life.

This clip consists of excerpts from a university talk entitled “Seeing The Light.” The main point concerns how a momentous life-changing event, an epiphany of the non-religious sort, can be transformed into a living reality. In my case it was seeing the great jazz artist John Coltrane live in performance when I was fifteen years old that in retrospect years later set the course of my life’s work.

Dramatic events such as illness, family issues, natural disasters, etc., happen every day to people….situations that to one degree or another are outside of an individual’s direct control and may result in potentially life changing consequences. What I am describing is  one’s realization that an epiphany occurred, possibly perceived contemporaneously or as in my case years later. The crucial question is were the ramifications of that event manifested in a meaningful way, through what I call the “work.” This means obtaining the necessary knowledge and resources towards realizing the implications of the epiphany.
