To\nwhom it may concern:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allow\nme to introduce myself. For the past forty plus years I have been a jazz\nsaxophonist, composer and educator who in 2011 received the highest honor given\nin the field by the US government, the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz\nMasters award as well as other international accolades throughout my career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\nhave a story to share with people that I call \u201cSeeing The Light.\u201d It begins\nwith contracting polio as a child, which seemed to set the course of my future\nin one direction, only to be changed by a pivotal event that ultimately\nredirected my life\u2019s work. It is a universal story for all people concerning\nhow an extremely powerful and personal experience, once realized, can become a\ncatalyst for change and direction in one\u2019s life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This\nclip consists of excerpts from a university talk entitled \u201cSeeing The Light.\u201d The\nmain point concerns how a momentous life-changing event, an epiphany of the\nnon-religious sort, can be transformed into a living reality. In my case it was\nseeing the great jazz artist John Coltrane live in performance when I was\nfifteen years old that in retrospect years later set the course of my life\u2019s\nwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dramatic\nevents such as illness, family issues, natural disasters, etc., happen every day\nto people\u2026.situations that to one degree or another are outside of an\nindividual\u2019s direct control and may result in potentially life changing\nconsequences. What I am describing is \none\u2019s realization that an epiphany occurred, possibly perceived\ncontemporaneously or as in my case years later. The crucial question is were\nthe ramifications of that event manifested in a meaningful way, through what I\ncall the \u201cwork.\u201d This means obtaining the necessary knowledge and resources\ntowards realizing the implications of the epiphany.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
